Event Details

Americana is the Student Archivists at Maryland (SAM) annual symposium that brings archives professionals back to campus to speak to UMD iSchool students, alumni, and faculty about their experiences in the field. This event is always a meaningful, substantive celebration of the University of Maryland archival community and the richness of the archival field. This year's event will focus on the growing international element in archival work and the challenges and opportunities that it presents.

OUR PANELISTS

  • Dr. Trudy Peterson: Former Archivist for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Acting Archivist of the United States, Commissioner of the U.S.-Russia Joint Commission on MIAs/POWs, and President of the Society of American Archivists. Dr. Peterson will be discussing the role of archives in transitional justice.
  • Chris Naylor: Chief of Textual Processing at the National Archives and Records Administration. Mr. Naylor will be demonstrating the Holocaust International Research Portal for records related to Nazi-era cultural property.
This year we will also be presenting the first ever Distinguished Archival Alumni Award to Paul Wester, an alumnus of the University of Maryland archives specialization who has demonstrated excellence in his career over the past 22 years at the National Archives. Mr. Wester currently serves as the Director of Modern Records Programs and he regularly demonstrates his commitment to the University of Maryland's iSchool by returning as a guest lecturer.

The event will open with a reception from 6-6:30 pm, during which light refreshments and hors d'oeuvres will be served. The panel will commence at 6:30 and will be followed by a question-and-answer session.
